Wisdom - Mix Media
What does this Artwork represent?
This piece is a portrayal of any decision that we as humans have to make while we are upset. The sobbing eyes represent sadness, and the brain in the middle being lifted up by human hands shows that to keep the heart safe, one should ALWAYS use their brain. Furthermore, the only way one can put their brain above their heart is by convincing themselves, nobody else can do that for them, it cannot be done automatically, they have to hold their brain using their own hands(not literally) so that the heart remains unaffected.
The real yet the abstract nature of this painting represents how this process seems almost surreal but in my opinion, is always the best solution. The darkness above the hands and the bright background below it also contribute to how the brain is what keeps the heart happy even though we as humans don't realize it. Every decision made for the heart THROUGH the brain is going to keep the heart out of any darkness.
Through this artwork, I want the audience to understand that it's completely okay and recommended (by me) to not put your heart first, but instead your brain. Which will then act as an umbrella, and from my standpoint, that is true wisdom during moments of sorrow.
Development
1. The layout and practice
I wanted this piece to be one of my best pieces because it has such a deep meaning and at the time I was making it(March - May 2021) the coronavirus pandemic in India was at an all time high and my MYP-5 IB e-Assessments were approaching. I had a lot to do, and the situation in my country was not helping.
Which is why I made basic layouts of everything I wanted to represent in the artwork. I kept erasing and drawing and erasing and drawing until I knew I was ready to start.
At first the Hands were not a part of the layout and as I progressed I though that adding them would add a subtle touch to both the meaning and the aesthetic of the piece.
2) Sketching
This part was fairly easy to do since I had already tough and sketched out what I wanted in my sketchbook. What was challenging however were the hands, but I just though of how one's hands would look if they were holding a burger and that's exactly what I drew.
